Strategic Assessment

Strategic Vector

Science Park Graz is positioned as a publicly supported high-tech startup incubator with a clear specialization in tech-based and space-related entrepreneurship through ESA BIC Austria. Its strategic direction appears centered on venture creation, ecosystem building, and early-stage commercialization rather than direct product monetization.

Efficiency Ratio

Resource-to-output efficiency appears solid for an incubator: a relatively small institutional footprint supports a long-running pipeline of startup support, partnerships, and documented portfolio activity, but public evidence on scale, staffing, and current throughput is limited.

About
Science Park Graz GmbH, founded 2002, at Sandgasse 36/IV in Graz, with 2 to 10 staff. A publicly funded institution supporting the creation of innovative technology-based startups in Graz and Styria, working with founders from TRL 1-3 (idea) through TRL 4-6 (prototype) to TRL 7-9 (on the market). It provides counselling, coaching, infrastructure and financing in the pre-startup period, backed by a mentoring programme bundling expertise from all Styrian university institutions and successful entrepreneurs. ESA BIC AUSTRIA. SPG manages and coordinates the ESA Business Incubation Centre in Austria, opened in 2016 as part of the Europe-wide BIC network, aimed at transferring technologies from space into other parts of the economy. SPG is also ESA Business Applications Ambassador for Austria, offering network access and funding routes for SMEs and industry using space systems and technologies. NETWORK AND FINANCE. Part of AplusB, the Austrian incubator network of nine incubation centres bridging academia and business. A cooperation with Steiermärkische Sparkasse provides financing routes for startups. CURRENT PORTFOLIO examples include DiLT Analytics (a computer science faculty spin-off), PureSurf (bio-based surfactants) and openmaind (platform-independent SaaS coordinating heterogeneous robot fleets).
Relevancy
Graz incubator that runs ESA BIC Austria, the national space technology incubator — and the place Drone Rescue Systems came from. On the evidence of this map it is one of only two routes by which a new Austrian aerospace company gets started.
