- Composite general-aviation manufacturer headquartered in Wiener Neustadt, founded in 1981 by Wolf Hoffmann as Hoffmann Flugzeugbau in Friesach and renamed Diamond Aircraft in 1996. The company offers what it calls the most complete range of certified piston aircraft, from the two-seat DA20 single to the seven-seat DA62, all sharing a common design DNA built around carbon-fibre airframes and jet-fuel diesel engines. It certified the first composite trainer (DA20 Katana) and the first diesel twin (DA42). Around 501 to 1,000 employees across two locations. Tagline: For the Passion of Flying. The defence-relevant line is the Multi-Purpose Platform family. The DA42 MPP has passed 100 deliveries to commercial operators and government agencies. The DA62 MPP, in service since 2016, is the larger platform, running twin turbocharged FADEC-controlled Austro Engine AE330 powerplants on globally available jet fuel for 10-hour non-stop missions. The aircraft is designed as a sensor truck: approved payloads include EO/IR gimbals such as the Euroflir 410, land and sea radars, AIS receivers, maritime radios, COMINT packages, airborne laser scanners and large-format digital aerial cameras, with matching ground stations offered as a turnkey counterpart. A February 2025 demonstration flew 9 hours 20 minutes and over 900 nautical miles from Wiener Neustadt across the Croatian and Italian Adriatic coasts and back through Venice and Carinthia, covering mountainous, maritime, coastal and urban environments in one sortie. The operational argument the company makes is cost and acoustics rather than performance: low operating cost per hour, and a noise signature quiet enough to loiter over an area of interest without being noticed — which is why law-enforcement buyers, not military ones, are the centre of gravity. Austro Engine is confirmed by the company as part of the Diamond Aircraft Group.
